THE Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old man, Ernest Bassey, for alleged armed robbery and cultism.
The suspect, who hails from Okon in Eket and resides at 204, Nwaniba Street, Uyo, was said to have been arrested after sustained monitoring by the police anti-cultism team on Friday.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Elkana Bala, said on Sunday that the police recovered one locally-made pistol from the suspect.
According to him, after interrogation, Bassey confessed to being a cult member and leader of a notorious gang that had been terrorising the Uyo metropolis.
Bala, however, said investigation was ongoing, adding that the police would charge the suspect to court at the end of investigation.
“On October 20, 2017, at about 2300 hours, following a sustained monitoring, the command’s anti-cultism team arrested one Ernest William Bassey, male, aged 28 years, from Okon, Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, and resident at 204, Nwaniba Street, Uyo LGA.
“He was arrested along Ekpri Nsukara in the Uyo LGA. One-locally made pistol was recovered from him. Bassey confessed to being a cult member and leader of a notorious gang responsible for various violent crimes in and around the Uyo metropolis.
“Investigation is in progress. The suspect will soon be charged to court when the investigation is complete,” he said.
