BENIN—ASSISTANT Inspector General of Police, Zone  5, Mr Abubakar Mohammed, has said that the force was ready to partner  community leaders in Edo State to reduce the spate of crime in the state.

The AIG spoke in Benin, at a stakeholders meeting with community leaders and youths from Edo South senatorial zone.

He said that the interactive meeting had opened a new chapter in the areas of cooperation and mutual collaboration with regard to community partnership in terms of information sharing that may lead to intelligence and synergy to tackle the security challenges in the neighbourhoods and in the state.

He said that the Police had an intelligence report that the recent pronouncement by the Benin monarch, Oba Ewuare II and policies of the state government on the activities of CDAs and revenue collectors in the state had not gone down well with some youths who had vowed to make the state ungovernable if the policies were not reversed.

He stressed that such has  led to a rise in cases of kidnapping, cultism and armed robbery amongst others in the state.

The AIG disclosed that the zone would revive the various vigilante groups and the Police Community  Relations  Committee, PCRC, in order to checkmate crimes in the various communities.

The Edo Commissioner of Police Mr. Haliru Gwandu, on his part, appealed to the various community leaders to abide by the laws of the land and shun indiscriminate sale of lands, noting that if such was done by their ancestors, there would not have been lands left for the present development of the state.
