Akwa Ibom Elders urge Senate to end confusion over Senatorial district

The Akwa Ibom North East Elders forum has called on the Senate leadership to take steps that would end confusion involving two eminent personalities from its district.

Speaking with DAILY POST in Abuja, the forum’s Chairman, Elder Idoreyin Jacot explained that continued crisis over the court judgement in Uyo affirming Hon. Bassey Etim as their Senator was unacceptable.

“As elders, we are deeply concerned. There was similar issue in Kogi State and the person who was declared by the court was sworn in. Why not the same now?

“Both of them are our illustrious sons and the court seemed to have taken a decision which I think we should be bound to obey as good citizens”, he emphasised.

Displaying a copy of a letter written by the Attorney-General of the federation to the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki to our correspondent, he insisted that it was in the interest of Akwa Ibom people and Nigerians that Hon. Bassey Etim be sworn in.

Copy of the letter written by the AGF, Abubakar Malami addressed to the Senate President on 17th March, 2017 explained that there was no stay of execution with regards to the judgement delivered by a federal High Court in the pre-election matter, hence, Etim should be sworn in.

Part of the letter reads: “The Senate of the National Assembly is required by law to comply with the court judgement.”
