Ahead of the 2017 local government election in Akwa Ibom State, the Akwa Ibom State, Independence Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) has said it would not honour correspondence from any other party official apart from the party chairman.
AKISIEC Chairman, Mrs. Gloria Ukpong stated this on Wednesday during a meeting with party officials and other stakeholders to plan for the successful execution of the election which will hold on November 11.
“We will only honour letters signed by the chairmen not the secretaries. We are doing this because we have run into a lot of problems in the past and I want to stop that.
Also, only the parties that are registered will be allowed to take part in the forth coming election.
When the time table is out, you will see the period in which you are allowed to register with us. Any party that does not register in our office by the end of that last day shall not participate in the coming election”
According to her, AKISIEC will need a specimen signature of the state chairman on a letter from the national chairman showing that such person is the authentic state chairman in Akwa Ibom State.
The AKISIEC chairman said failure by any party to fulfill this condition means the chairman will not be recognized and his name will not be included in the list of parties that will participate in the forth coming election.
She said the letter of introduction by the National Chairman must be on the parties’ letter head and the state chairman will sign twice his specimen signature which is to be stored for referencing at AKISIEC.
It will be recalled that the PDP and other political parties have political rivalry that has created factions and with AKISIEC new regulation, a lot of pundits expect that some chairmen may not be able to fulfill this condition and may not participate in the election.
Akwa Ibom State Electoral Commission ( AKISIEC) has scheduled Saturday, 11th November 2017, for the election of Chairmen and Councillors into the 31 Local Government Councils of the state.
