Akwa Ibom police kill four bandits in gun battle, arrest one

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has killed four bandits suspected to be terrorising Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area and its environs in a fierce gun battle.

 The security operatives also arrested one of the hoodlums, who operated on three motorbikes and robbed some persons along Aba road by Ikot Osurua before heading to banking area along the same road to collect ATM cards from customers and shop owners.

Speaking in Uyo on Friday, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, said that the police recovered locally made pistols, ammunition and the sum of N63,000 from the hoodlums.

 He explained that the robbers were the same people responsible for the robbery at Gulfsafrin fuel station near the residence of Senator Godswill Akpabio in Ukana, Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim LGA.

The robbers had on the said day shot to scare members of a political party meeting in Akpabio’s house.

Ogunjemilusi said the Command was poised to sustain its fight against every form of criminality in the state and committed to the protection of lives and property.

He advised motorcycle riders in Ikot Ekpene to fish out the criminals spoiling their trade among them and added that the curfew on the use of motorcycles after 6pm could only be lifted if criminally-minded persons among them were exposed.

Ogunjemilusi said, “The Command under my watch has recorded another great breakthrough in her fight against criminal elements in the state.

 “On August 23, 2018, at about 5pm, five notorious armed robbers, led by Kingsley Peter, a.k.a “Morale” who is the gang leader, using three motorcycles robbed some persons along Aba Road by Ikot Osurua before proceeding to a banking area along the same road to dispossess customers and shops owners of their ATM cards.

“My men of Ikot Ekpene Division led by the Divisional Police Officer, SP Benjamin Achegbani, trailed and engaged the hoodlums in a fierce shootout, four of the armed robbers were shot dead while one Akwaowo Umoren (m) of Ikot Inemme in Essien Udim LGA was arrested with an AK47 with 60 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.

 “Other exhibits recovered were five locally-made pistols, eight live cartridges, two rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, 1 AK47 magazine, three expended cartridges, two masks, six assorted phones, three motorcycles, physical cash of N63,000 only, “ he said.

 Divisional Police Officer of Ikot Ekpene, Benjamin Achegbani said the armed robbers were apprehended through the efforts of an informant who trailed the hoodlums as they robbed from shop from shop in broad daylight.

 He said when the police accosted the robbers, they (hoodlums) engaged them in a shootout leading to the death of four of them, while he (the DPO) was slightly injured in the encounter.

The surviving armed robber, Daniel Umoren, said he was lured into the crime by the thieves when his motorcycle was stolen and added that he was given the ammunition he used for the robbery.
