The Akwa Ibom State Government says it is reviewing some key road projects as it considers a draft of the 2019 budget, saying the move is aimed at actualising the sustainable development drive of the current administration.

According to a statement on Thursday, these were part of deliberations during the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Udom Emmanuel recently.

Speaking with Government House correspondents shortly after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Charles Udoh, accompanied by the Commissioner of Finance, Mr. Nsikan Nkan, and their counterpart in the Ministry of Works, Mr. Ephraim Inyangeyen, said the council’s deliberations were geared towards ensuring the actualisation of the five-point agenda of the state government.

Nkan said the 2019 draft budget was presented to the exco for consideration before forwarding it to the state House of Assembly for approval.

On the estimated figure of the budget, the commissioner said the actual amount could not be provided at the moment, explaining that the draft was still undergoing some modifications before arriving at the total figure, which he promised to give after the final adjustments were made.

The Works commissioner also noted that the state government had reviewed some of the awarded road projects which have been ongoing at a slow pace due to failure of the contractors to comply with the terms of the contracts.

He said the ongoing Ibom Deep Seaport Super Highway, which was earlier awarded on alternative funding approach, had also been taken over by the state government for faster execution.

Meanwhile, the state government has said the Cultism and other Violent Behaviour Prohibition Order 2018 was still in place, while warning persons planning to foment trouble in the state to bury such thoughts.

A statement by Udoh stressed that the order, which became effective from March 12, 2018, prohibits and bans the operations and activities of all cult groups in the state.
