Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has said the Asaba Stadium named after the late former Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, will be ready in May to host the 2018 Africa Senior Athletics Championships in August.
Okowa, who gave the assurance during an inspection of the stadium on Thursday, said the contractor handling the project had kept his promise to deliver the project in line with agreed specifications.
He emphasised that the state was ready to host the African athletics competition in August, adding that upon completion, the stadium would become one of the best in the country and would be regularly been hosting local and international competitions.
The governor added that the stadium would enhance the state government’s plans for youths and sports development to help reduce crime in the state, particularly in Asaba.
He said, “I am told by the contractors that looking onto the month of May they should be completing this project and I believe that once the stadium is completed some of these national assignments and competitions will also take place here, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation has already spoken towards that because once something is good it cannot be hidden.
“We are in the plan to grow a lot of sporting activities as we are actually concerned with youth sport development and I am sure that a lot of activities will be taking place here, recently we have been using the Ozoro Stadium; we will not stop using it but this obviously will be a higher quality stadium.”
