Atiku: PDP narrows search for running mate to Abia, Ebonyi

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have narrowed down the search for its presidential running mate to Abia and Ebonyi states.

The party had resolved to choose the vice presidential candidate from South-East for what a source described as “political expediency.” But he said the slot was not going to be thrown open to all the five South-East states.

“Anambra has been cornering most positions meant for South-East; they produced vice president before, apart from three Senate presidents. Enugu had the Senate President and Deputy for 12 years.

“The slot might go either to Abia or Ebonyi. It would have gone to Imo, but the state is an APC state,” he explained.

Since former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged as the PDP presidential candidate, a lot of names have been bandied as likely vice presidential candidate.

Among those rumoured as possible choice are former Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi; Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu; former governor of old Anambra State, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo and former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

But the source said those positioning themselves would get the shock of their lives when the time comes.

“Those positioning themselves as presidential running mate will be disappointed. None of them will be considered,” he said.

Asked who is being positioned as likely Atiku’s running mate, the source could not give a categorical answer, but said the person would likely emerge this week.

“There are many qualified people from the two states. The search is on. There have been series of meetings going on and before the end of this week, the vice presidential candidate will be announced,” he disclosed.

There was rumour that Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, would have been picked as running mate if Aminu Tambuwal had won the presidential ticket. It is not clear if Atiku would be disposed to work with him.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe is equally being considered.

There are no names thrown up so far from Ebonyi State, but the source said former governor, Senator Sam Egwu, is a vice presidential material.

“Like I told you, somebody no one thinks of might emerge. Let’s wait and see how the thing goes,” he added.
