Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson says the state will focus on upgrading its sports facilities to host major matches and tournaments.
The final of the 2018 Women’s Aiteo Cup was played at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, with Rivers Angels defeating Ibom Angels 1-0 last week.
Dickson, who hosted the Nigeria Football Federation board delegation led by Amaju Pinnick before the match, said his government was interested in youth development.
He said, “We want the NFF to bring more high level continental and local matches to our stadium. The Samson Siasia Stadium here has one of the best playing turfs in the country.”
The governor said he had directed that the stadium be upgraded to a top facility on the continent.
He said, “More renovation work is going to be carried out here soon so that it can meet up with some of the best stadiums we have on the continent.”
Dickson expressed his delight that Bayelsa has been dominating wrestling and swimming in the country, saying his government would aim to lead other sports with its sports academy for the development and training of talented youths in the state.
He said, “We have not only intensified youth development but building a specialised sports academy that will take care of kids from the primary school level. These pupils are going to be put in a boarding facility that will groom their sports talents as well as take care of their education. It is a one of its kind in the country.”
