A commercial bus driver yesterday rammed into two wheelbarrow pushers, killed one of them instantly and inflicted life-threatening injury on the other. The accident occurred at Mile 1, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Immediately after the accident, the driver alighted from the bus, with registration number DS531 APP, and fled, while sympathisers attended to the injured victim.
The driver, according to a witness, had picked some passengers from Lagos bus stop and headed for Rumuokoro, dived into the median where the victims, said to be indigenes of Akwa Ibom State, positioned their wheelbarrows waiting for customers. Angry wheelbarrow pushers and some trad-ers around the scene of the accident, who knew the victims, threatened to go in search of the driver, before officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) evacuated the victim’s body. A witness, Lucky Dike, claimed that the driver was high on either drugs or alcohol, judging from the way the bus suddenly veered off its lane.
He said: “The driver could have been high on something, most of them are. He was speeding recklessly and they usually do as they contest for passengers in the morning. It was about 8a.m. “He overtook a vehicle at the busy Mile 1 Market area. Suddenly he lost control, swerved the bus to the median and hit a streetlight pole on which the two wheelbarrow pushers were leaning. One died on the spot. It is doubtful if the one rushed to the hospital would make it.”
