– Police and DSS operatives have barricaded all roads leading to the venue of the convention at the Shark Stadium in Port Harcourt
– The PDP is yet to contact journalists for accreditation for the convention and officials of the party are not picking calls to their phones
– Factional chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff has remained adamant that the PDP convention must not hold until his conditions have been met
There is tension in Port Harcourt over fears that the national convention of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) slated for today, Wednesday, August 17, 2016, has been cancelled.
This comes on the heels of the many court cases bordering on the legality of the convention.
Although facts to that effect are still sketchy, security operatives, including soldiers, members of the Department of State Service (DSS) and police are heavily on ground, barricading roads and preventing anyone from entering Shark Stadium, the PDP convention ground.
The stern looking security officers who barricaded our correspondent from entering the venue, said the PDP convention has been put on hold.
The officers said: “Look, nobody is inside, the convention has been canceled. NTA and other journalists came here but they have all been told to go back, nobody has entered inside because there is nothing going there.”
A call made to the Secretary of the Nigerian Union of Journalists in Port Harcourt, Amaechi Udocechi, confirmed the development.
He said “The PDP officials have not told us anything. They are not picking calls made to their phones. Nothing like accreditation. Everywhere is just silent.
“So many court cases are on ground, so they cannot hold convention in the midst of the many cases on ground.”
As at the time NAIJ.com correspondent arrived the venue, no member of the delegate was on ground and all kept sealed lips while confusion still envelopes the air.
Ali Modu Sherriff has remained against the holding of the PDP convention saying that party the must accept his conditions before the convention can hold.
