Stakeholders under the umbrella of Usagbe Club of Nigeria in Weppa Wanno in the north senatorial district of Edo state weekend rose from this year’s convention with a task on well meaning citizens of the country to rise up with one voice against the activities of sectional interests and groups in their agitations capable of plunging the nation bloodbath.
This is as the State Deputy Governor; Hon. Philip Shaibu at the event described as “diversionary” the loud call by notable Nigerians for the restructuring of the country, arguing that the constitution remains sacrosanct through the constitutional review committee so that all nagging national issues can be ventilated and tackled headlong.
He said, “Whatever you feel Nigeria should look like, wherever you think the structure should be like that is where the energy should taken to. I am seeing this issue of secession and restructuring as a diversion. For me, my appeal to Nigerians is that, lets pin our leaders to the issue of infrastructure, employment, good governance than diverting our attention; let’s channel that energy to the constitutional review committee.
Shaibu posited that the call for past reform conference is accepted but such conferences must be generally accepted and not one with political ambition or interest, stressing that the nation has a vibrant legislature at both national and state levels which follow rules guiding their activities.
He reiterated the commitment of the state government to live up to its promise to ensure improved welfare of the people through the transformation and continuity programmes of the Obaseki led administration.
Speakers at the well attended convention with the theme: “Social Clubs, Good Governance and Development” held in Benin the state capital condemned in very strong terms the agitation by groups in the Southeastern part of the country for Biafra and the consequent quit notice order slammed on the Igbos in the north by the Arewa Youths, pointing out that such promptings was heightened by the call for restructuring of the nation.
They urged the citizens irrespective of religious, political and ethnic affiliations to resist divisive temptations but to pray sincerely for both the country and ailing President Muhammadu Buhari presently receiving treatment in the United Kingdom hospital to quickly recover and for peace to reign while the raging drums of war could be silenced across the polity.
The members during their deliberations also promised to contribute meaningfully towards charting the course for quick socio-economic and political development of communities within the area and the state at large even as they called for sincere partnership with the state government to realize their laudable goals and objectives.
President of the Club, Mr. John Ikimalo in his address and report to the body tasked indigenes of Weppa Wanno to come home and invest, particularly, in agricultural sector and other key development areas through the upgrading of the status of the Agenebode College of Agriculture and called on the state government to make concerted effort to rebuild most of the dilapidated infrastructure in primary school and to provide them with science teachers as well as provision of access roads and other amenities.
