BENIN—THE Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, in Edo State, has faulted the leadership of Joint Health Sector Union, JOHESU, over what it described as its deliberate acts to frustrate other departments in the health sector due to their incessant strike actions.

Chairman of NMA in the state, Dr Osaigbovo Emmanuel, stated this while briefing newsmen in Benin City, yesterday.

He alleged that somebody said to be close to the leader of JOHESU in Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, ISTH, Ogorbo Ogobo, allegedly physically attacked the Chairman Medical Advisory Council, CMAC, of ISTH, Dr Wilson Ovienria, when he was trying to restore normalcy in the hospital while the strike was on.

But when contacted, Ogobo denied the allegation, saying “It is not true and the only thing that happened was that on 22/09/17, one doctor slapped me as the executive of JOHESU, when were going round to ascertain the level of compliance and also destroyed one of our phones that was used to cover the incident.”

But Osaigbovo said that the public must be aware of the unprofessional conduct of JOEHSU members,  saying it poses serious threat to the health sector in Edo State.

“This piece is not dedicated to determine the legality of the strike, but to say, when you declare a strike, as a responsible union, you are expected to have convincing support  of your members.

“After, declaring strike that apparently didn’t go down with majority of the members, members of JOHESU who are ‘strike enforcers ‘ invaded the public hospital and started beating up some of their members who were still working without prompting.”

“It is no news that ISTH, Irrua is a centre for diagnosis and treatment of Lasser fever. At the Lasser fever Institute, the strike enforcers forced patients with the deadly disease out of the ward, beat up the scientific officer on duty and in the process spilled some blood samples that have tested positive to the highly infectious virus,” he stated.

He maintained that the allegation against Dr Ovienria that he assaulted one of the them was not only false but a clear case of shadow chasing.
