Edo urges residents to quit flood-prone areas

The Edo State Government yesterday urged people living in riverine communities and other flood-prone areas to seek refuge in safe havens created in local government areas in the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, Yakubu Gowon, in a statement, said  the warning became necessary due to days of persistent rainfall and the opening of dams by neighbouring countries.

He said while the Nigerian Meteorological Agency had warned of high floods in some states including Edo, the River Niger was fast over-flowing its bank.

He said communities in Ikpoba-Okha, Ovia North -East, Esan South-East, Estako Central and Etsako East local councils of the state had been identified as areas prone to flooding.
