An educationist and Chief Executive Officer of Showers Group, Mrs. Ekama Akpan, has said that the Rivers State Government’s decision to shut down private schools with substandard facilities will help to improve the standard of primary and secondary education in the state.

Akpan, who spoke with journalists in Port Harcourt on Thursday, noted that government’s decision would encourage private school owners to embrace high standard and contribute to the growth of education in Rivers.

It would be recalled that the Rivers State Government had threatened to shut down schools with poor facilities, especially those without good learning and recreational equipment.

But Akpan, who is the former chairperson of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Rivers and Bayelsa States chapter, urged the state government to regulate private primary and secondary schools with transparency.

She said, “The governor has the right to close schools that are not up to the required standard. Some teachers in some of the schools we have around here do not have the passion to teach the children.

“Regulating the establishment of private schools is okay, but the government should regulate them with transparency. If the government regulates well, it will help the development of the education sector.”

The expert expressed the need to return Christian Religious Knowledge to the school curriculum in order to instil discipline in pupils and secondary school students, who might want to join cult groups in future.

Akpan, who observed that some parents had kicked against making Christian Religious Studies part of the school syllabus, pointed out that children, who were under pressure to be part of one cult group or the other, should join religious organisations in school.

She noted that her organisation (Showers Group) was put in place to inspire children and train them to become leaders of tomorrow.
