Government College Ughelli Old Boys to honour its icons in Asaba

The Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (GCUOBA) is set to honour its icons at its forthcoming dinner and fundraising in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

The icons to be honoured with “Lifetime Achievement” awards include Prince Emmanuel Gbiwen, Mr Godson Keyamo, Dr. Henry Bozimo, Prof. Mebenin Awipi, Mr Gregs Thomopoulos, Prof Oyewale Tomori, Capt. Godwin Ogisi, Chief James Erhuero, Sir Simeon Efenudu, Chief Charles Majoroh and Chief Macaulay Ofurhie.

GCUOBA President General Worldwide Prof Oritsegbemi Omatete, at a news conference yesterday in Lagos, said the event would hold on Saturday, October 13, at the Grand Hotel and Suites, Asaba.

He said: “The national annual dinner is a forum for old boys, stakeholders in education at Federal and State levels and well-wishers to appraise the progress that old boys of the school have made in their efforts to revamp the  school.

“This year some distinguished old boys of the school who have attained excellence in their chosen fields and contributed to the development of the school as well as corporate organisations that have donated infrastructure to the school, among them Shell Nigeria and NDDC would be honoured. NDCC and Shell will also be receiving corporate awards while 11 Ancient Mariners will be conferred with the distinguished Lifetime Achievement Awards.”

Omatete added: “For the last 15 years, the old boys of the school have raised and attracted over a billion naira in donations to the restoration and building of facilities in the school. Specifically, the Niger Delta development Commission (NDDC) recently tarred about 3.8km of internal roads in the school, the Shell Petroleum Development Company installed what is perhaps the first six-lane Tartan Track in nay public school in Nigeria at the school, and Chevron Deep Water Company is building a new laboratory complex for the school.”

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is expected to be the chief host. Minister of Education Adamu Adamu and Ambassador Joseph Keshi are the special guests of honour.  Chief Joseph Akpieyi will speak on: “Sustainability of Educational Excellence in Government Public Secondary Schools in Nigeria – Which Way Forward?”.
