Greenfield Assets Limited has taken over the sponsorship of the National Sports Festival for the next 10 years.
The sponsorship will commence this year with the 19th edition of the festival holding in Abuja from December 6-16.
Signing the partnership agreement between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Greenfield, the Minister of Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung, said their partner would only provide funds for the festival but the ownership still remained with the ministry.
He said Greenfield had to come in because of the inability of Cross Rivers State to host for the second year running.
“The NSF has not been held for some years now due to shortage of funds especially at the state level. The prevailing low capability, motivation and willingness of states to take up hosting rights of the NSF are seriously affecting its sustainability and value to the extent that it is gradually getting moribund,” he said.
Dalung advised Greenfield to bring their expertise and massive experience to bear on the successful sponsorship, promotion and hosting of the 2018 edition and subsequent editions.
Responding, the Group Managing Director of Greenfield, Paul Obanua, said what they had signed was agreement to sponsor, develop, manage, promote and market the festival for a period of 10 years.
“First we want to make sure that the event is sustainable, we want to take it from the comatose state it is today to viability. This why we are coming in; we have the potentials to resuscitate and generate revenue for the ministry, the athletes and the participating states,” he said.
