Group writes to EFCC, demands probe of Abia’s finances since 1999

An Abia-based socio-political organisation, the Abia Rescue Movement has called on the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practice and other related offences Commission, ICPC, to probe the finances of Abia State from 1999 till date.

The group alleged that the monthly allocations accruing to the state were pocketed by the past governments, as they decried alleged high-scale looting currently going on under the Governor Okezie Ikpeazu-led Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, administration in Abia.

The group’s position was made known in an open letter signed by Donald Kalu and addressed to the Chairman of EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, a copy of which was forwarded to DAILY POST on Tuesday.

Part of the letter reads, “On behalf of the Abia Rescue Movement, we write to call on the EFCC AND ICPC to set the machinery in motion to probe the Governors and Governments of Abia state from 1999 till date. The allocations that accrued to Abia state from then till now largely went into private pockets of Abia past and present Governors and their cronies.

“There is no where the evidence of Governance is in Abia state. The workers are owed for months and the pensioners for years. These Government officials bought estates and houses at all major cities in Nigeria and the world and these have to be recovered .

“Abia is reeking in stagnation and allowing some of the looters to still go ahead to contest the 2019 elections will be great injustice against the people. More than ninety percent of the allocations to Abia state developed wings and should be recovered.”
