YENAGOA—A police sergeant was reportedly killed, weekend, in Bayelsa State by gunmen, who made away with his service rifle.
This is just as police thwarted an attempt by gunmen to kidnap the state Treasurer of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Gbalipre Turner.
While the attack on the police occurred at Akenfia community in Yenagoa Local Government Area, the foiled kidnap attempt on the PDP chieftain took place at Opume in Ogbia Local Government Area of the state.
The gunmen, who shot dead the policeman, were said to have approached him, pretending to be lost strangers asking for direction.
It was learned that while the police sergeant was offering assistance he was shot at close range with locally-made pistol and his rifle taken away.
According to a source, the officer fought gallantly and shot two of his attackers, adding “the blood trail showed that some of the police killers sustained injuries.”
At Opume community in Ogbia, policemen foiled the attempt to invade the home of Turner, the state PDP’s Treasurer, who escaped through a back door when he sighted the gunmen.
Spokesman of the Command, Mr. Asimin Butswat, who confirmed the development, said the command is awaiting more details while investigations are on.
A statement by Mr. Amiebi Turner, Acting Chairman of the Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, Central Zone, confirmed that the kidnapper’s target, Turner, who is also a member of the Opume Council of Chiefs.
Turner condemned the kidnap attempt and described the upsurge in assassination and kidnapping in the state as “a frantic attempt by criminals to liberalise crime in Bayelsa State.”
