Some gunmen have reportedly killed two persons as they razed Akpan Esiet Market, the biggest market in the Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The gunmen were said to have attacked the market around 11.14pm on Wednesday.

The assailants also reportedly burnt nearby houses and vehicles.

Eyewitnesses told our correspondent on Thursday that the hoodlums posted a notice that they would also attack Ukanafun LG headquarters as well as the divisional police headquarters in the area.

A resident, Mr. Sam Udo, said the hoodlums attacked the market to protest against the crackdown on their gang members by the Joint Task Force.

“Akpan Esiet Market, the biggest market in Ukanafun LGA, was burnt and looted by cult members and kidnappers to protest against the crackdown on their members by the JTF,” he said.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Odiko Ogbeche, said he was not aware of the incident.

He said, “I am not aware of that information.”

Meanwhile, the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress has called for Federal Government’s intervention to end cult activities in Akwa Ibom.
