AKWA IBOM ASSEMBLY OF SYMPATHY – House Takes up sponsorship of deceased member’s children
Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly moments ago announced the full-time support of children of a former member of the House who died last month, Hon. Aniekan Ukpong Akpan.
The late lawmaker was a member of the first Assembly between 1992 and 1993.
At a valedictory sitting in honor of the late Akpan, Speaker Onofiok Luke, said the House was going to give an initial 1.5million Naira for the funding of the education of the deceased children -two young boys.
He, however, promised subsequent support of the House.
It is on record that the Akwa Ibom State House under Barr Luke’s watch has made it a tradition to give financial supports to educational pursuits of children of deceased former members.
It will be recalled that only last month, he declared same amount of money as educational grants to the children of a member in whose honour the house had sat.
Addressing the widowed Mrs Akpan today, the Speaker said that in spite of the tragedy that had befell the family, the children had a bright future.
His words: “I sit here as one who lost his father at a young age too. But today, I sit to give testimony to God’s faithfulness. Your children will also have testimonies to give in Jesus’ name”, forcing tears of joy from the widow even as she shouted Amen.
Mrs Akpan used the occasion to pray God to bless the Speaker, Barr Onofiok Luke and members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.
