A former Governor of Akwa Ibom and Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio (PDP/Akwa Ibom North-West), has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
There had been rumours that Akpabio was set to dump PDP some days ago, but was prevented from doing so by Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel.
Akpabio (pictured with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu) announced his decision to leave the PDP Friday night, citing the crisis in the party.
Akpabio said, I have decided today, the 31st day of March, 2017 to resign from the PDP and move to the party that is bringing peace and direction to this country, the APC. So I move.”
“Over the past one year this party has disintegrated; because of the crisis in the party, I have decided to resign from the PDP and join the APC,” He said.
This is coming weeks after more than 500 PDP supporters in Ward 10 in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Senator Akpabio defection has caused panic and anxiety within the PDP and the kitchen cabinet of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel.
Addressing the gathering after his defection, Senator Akpabio said he decided to leave the PDP not to spite or disgrace anybody but because of injustice, leadership crisis and uncommon impunity, submitting that PDP have deviated from the ideals of the founding fathers.
Akpabio said his decision to dump the PDP was a hard one but not painful and thanked Former Nigerian President, General Olusegun Obasanjo and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for his support.
