YENAGOA—HOODLUMS struck in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, killing a police Sergeant for his rifle at a pub along DSP Alamieyeseigha Road.
This is coming barely few days after the killing of a journalist, two military personnel and a Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, officer in some parts of the state.
The hoodlums, it was also gathered, stole the deceased police AK-47 rifle after hacking him to death.
According to a source, who spoke in confidence, the policeman went to the pub to drink. Unknown to him, some bandits, who were interested in his rifle, joined him at the bar pretending to be customers.
The source said: “After taking some bottles, the policeman stood up and went to the backyard to urinate, while holding his rifle.
“The criminals followed him to the backyard, where they attacked and killed him before fleeing with his gun.”
It was gathered that police later stormed and raided shanties occupied by commercial sex workers in the area in search of the fleeing hoodlums.
Contacted, Bayelsa State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident.
, said: “On Sunday, at 1:30p.m., a police patrol team parked opposite a fast food joint along DSP Alamieyeseigha Road for surveillance operations.
“A Police Sergeant strayed away from the team and was attacked by hoodlums, who took away his firearm.
“Investigation is ongoing and we are following a promising lead.”
