Ahead of the nation’s 2019 general election, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Imo State has stated that it would not condone the old habit of pre-election rigging and manipulations through writing of lists or imposition of candidates which it said orchestrated the problems of the party in the state.
Charles Ezekwem, state chairman of the party, said that the party would not afford to repeat the mistakes of the past unless it had not learnt any lesson from such misadventure.
Briefing newsmen at the party’s secretariat in Owerri, Ezekwem assured that all aspirants of the party to whatever elective positions were free to approach the party for forms and other necessary requirements, saying that the party belongs to all members.
Ezekwem said that he was committed to enthroning laudable legacies which posterity would eternally applaud, adding that he would neither be intimidated nor be coerced into indulging in any act that would breed acrimony or disaffection within the party.
“My target is to return the PDP to Douglas House (Government House) Owerri and to win the majority in National and State Assemblies’ seats in 2019,” he said.
As part of her strategies to regain power in the state, Ezekwem said that although the party had been battling with numerous challenges, the State Working Committee (SWC) had remained undaunted like the Spartans of the ancient Greek.
“We are bent on enthroning lasting legacies which would reposition our party and make it the darling of the electorate,” he said.
According to him, the party had inaugurated the “Integrity Group” which is an agglutination of Imo people of like-minds who are desirous of partnering with the PDP and assisting it to record resounding electoral victory next year at no financial cost to the party.
The group, he said, had already established branches in Port Harcourt and Lagos while more branches would be inaugurated in the coming months
“These are great Imo sons and daughters fed up with the purposeless and motionless APC government in the state and therefore, desire a positive change which they believe only the PDP has the capacity to provide.
He dismissed the APC government in the state as a representation of recklessness, corruption, nepotism, thuggery and irritating deception, citing the recent alleged abuse of the Catholic Archbishop of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province by some government officials as a case in point.
While urging the Imo electorate to procure their PVCs so as to enthrone a welfarist and democratic party like the PDP, Ezekwem assured that the National Chairman of the party – Uche Secondus, has set out a reform programme that is all embracing saying “the PDP of today is a clear departure from the era of imposition and impunity”.
Mean while the party has condemned the alleged attack on the Archbishop of the Owerri Archdiocese Archbishop, Most Rev, Dr Anthony JV Obinna by the representatives of the state government during the burial of the church service of the mother of the Pro- Chancellor, Imo State University, Prince Alex Mbata, at the St Michaels Catholic Church, Ngwoma, Owerri North local government area Imo State.
