Owerri—Imo State House of Assembly has called on managers of banking institutions in the state to quickly address the incessant long queues experienced by bank customers while trying to use the Automated Teller Machines, ATMs.

Speaking to Vanguard yesterday in Owerri, the mover of the motion, Mr. Mike Iheanatu, described it as a sign of failure.

As part of the prayers of the motion, the lawmakers said “that the branch controller of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, in Imo State, be urged to take immediate steps and actions to ameliorate Imo citizens’ sufferings in the use of ATMs.”

Iheanatu, representing Aboh Mbaise state constituency, emphasised that “the banks have failed to service, sustain, maintain or satisfactorily discharge the responsibilities and purposes of introducing ATM and the policy.

“In Imo State, people queue up for several hours to carry out cash transactions with the ATM. There has been so much public outcry.

“Robbery incidents and avoidable thefts have been reported at several ATM points resulting from long stays, delays and unnecessary exposure.”
