THE Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Chris Ezike, on Tuesday said the police were not aware that Don Waney’s gang members, who were behind the New Year Day killings in Rivers State, were taking refuge in Oguta and Ohaji/Egbema LGAs in Imo.
Calling on the people residing in the riverine areas of the state not to panic, Ezike said it was speculative to say that the gang had infiltrated the state.
The CP spoke while fielding questions from newsmen in Owerri on Tuesday after inaugurating Operation Show of Force, which was meant to tackle kidnapping, armed robbery, child trafficking and cultism in the 27 local government areas of the state.
He explained that the operation would rekindle the confidence of the people in the police.
According to him, intelligence reports showed that Don Waney’s death had brought calm to the riverine areas of the state.
Debunking the speculation that the alleged arrival of Don Waney’s gang members in Imo State was causing security challenges, Ezike pointed out that the two-week exercise would provide the police the platform to fight crime better.
“I am not aware that Don Waney’s gang members have infiltrated Imo. These things are speculations which are far from the truth.
“We are on 24-hour patrol throughout the state to maintain law and order. This ‘Operation Show of Force’ would be carried out in the 27 LGAs of the state and it would last for two weeks,” he said.
