The Ministry of Education has distributed life jackets free to pupils in Kalay Township, Sagaing Region, who have to depend on rivers to reach school.
“We will distribute them at three schools from Pyintha, Natchaung and Latpanchaung villages in Kalay Township. These schools have many children who have to cross rivers. In the rainy season, they have to come by motorboat. After reporting to the central government, we received the life jackets. So we will be distributing them free of charge. We are distributing the life jackets in Pyintha village first. The other two villages will come tomorrow,” said Aung Kyaw Lwin, deputy head of Kalay Township Education Office.
Marn Ngaik Khin, headmistress of Pyintha Village Post-Primary School, said 11 children from Inkyaw village and Shwetaung Island had to travel about four miles to school, adding that they have to ride a motorboat in the rainy season as the roads were unusable.
“When the roads are good, pupils come to school by bicycle as they cannot afford the motorboat fare. In the rainy season, they have no choice but to ride a motorboat. The fare is Ks10,000 for a month. Those life jackets will be very beneficial for the children,” said the headteacher.
The Education Ministry reportedly sent 55 life jackets to Kalay Township.
