The Ondo State Government has said that it is ready to immunise about 700,000 children between the ages of nine months and five years against measles.

The state Commissioner for Health, Mr. Wahab Adegbenro, made this known on Tuesday in a meeting with journalists in Akure, the state capital.

The commissioner said the government was ready to combat the disease, which kills about 800,000 children globally every year.

He said, “We are targeting 700,000 children in this state when the immunisation programme starts in March.  We want our children to be vaccinated against measles. Measles infection is a deadly infection. “

On the outbreak of deadly Lassa fever in the state, Adegbenro also stated that the government had been proactive over the development, adding that the disease had been tamed from being spread across the state.

The commissioner declared that anybody or group of people caught burying corpses without the approval of the state government would be made to face the wrath of the law.

He disclosed that the government would soon provide a telephone lines for the people to call the medical team of the government to report cases of Lassa fever across the 18 local government areas of the state. He said all the calls made would be free of charge.   Copyright PUNCH.
