TROOPS attached to the Joint Task Force (JTF), codenamed Operation DELTA SAFE (OPDS), on Tuesday, killed four sea robbery suspects along KM-45 AWOBA Waterways in Rivers State.
The troops were said to have ambushed a gang of suspected sea robbers cum kidnappers during which the four robbery suspects met their waterloo.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Center OPDS, Major Abubakar Abdullahi on Thursday and made available to journalists in the Niger Delta region.
Where the ambush operation was carried out, the OPDS spokesperson said items such as two AK-47 rifles, three AK-47 magazines, 22 ammunition and one speed boat mounted with one 200 Horse-Power engine were recovered from the sea robbers.
Major Abdullahi also disclosed that the OPDS patrol team along Bayelsa waterways, while acting on a tip-off, raided the hideouts of sea pirates along FORUPA-LOBIA waterways.
According to him, the “sea pirates, on sighting the troops advancing, fled the hideout, and left behind three fiber boats and one 75 Horse-Power engine.”
He added that the hideout of the criminals was “subsequently destroyed while the troops continued with their patrols.”
“In view of this, the Commander, Operation DELTA SAFE, Rear Admiral Apochi Suleiman, wishes to commend law-abiding citizen for their support by providing timely and useful information to troops.
He appealed for more cooperation from inhabitants of Joint Operation Area.
“He assured the communities, oil companies and other stakeholders of OPDS’s resolve to protect oil and gas infrastructure, prevent and deter crude oil theft, sea robbery, pipeline vandalism and other form of criminalities in the region that could impact negatively on the economy of the nation,” Major Abdullahi noted.
