As President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, visits Imo State today to drum support for Governor Rochas Okorocha and other All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the April 11 elections, prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members are set to defect to APC.
During the March 28 presidential and National Assembly elections, Imo people had massively voted PDP, a development that had thrown the Okorocha-led APC in the state into confusion.
Daily Sun gathered that the dismal performance of APC in the state in the last poll informed the coming of Buhari, who is expected to encourage the people of the state to seize the opportunity of Saturday’s election to return Okorocha and other APC legislators in order to connect to the government at the centre.
Already, two PDP governorship aspirants, Chief Jerry Chukwueke and Chief Bethel Nzimako, who could not make it during the party’s primary election, have assured Okorocha of their support.
On Easter Sunday, Governor Okorocha had stormed the home of Nzimako, who was the running mate of Chief Ifeanyi Ararume in 2007, where he met with a large number of the PDP leaders in Owerri-West Local Government Area, who would today formally defect to APC.
Speaking at the occasion, Okorocha urged the leaders to join him in APC to help get the Igbo due from the incoming government at the centre beginning from May 29.
He told them that APC was now the best option for the Igbo man as after the Buhari presidency in 2019, the Igbo would ascend the presidency.
The governor who boasted that he had done much for Imo State, asked the people to imagine what he would then do when he become Igbo president and comes to land in his jet at the Sam Mbakwe Airport.
He lamented that the PDP rigging of the election during the presidential election had robbed the state the Senate Presidency zone to the South-East by the APC.
The governor regretted that members of APC in the state, including commissioners in his cabinet were beaten up and maltreated by the security agents deployed by the PDP members from Abuja in their desperate bid to manipulate the presidential polls.
He urged the people of the Owerri-West to sieze the new dawn and support APC in the governorship and state assembly elections.
Nzimako known as Ohiahuruagu and a former PDP governorship aspirant commended Okorocha for his vision which many of them in the PDP did not see.
He assured the governor that the opinion moulders from the area have no choice than to support him.
Chief Chukwueke who arrived with Okorocha to the Orogwe home of Nzimako together with Deputy Governor Eze Madumere regretted that the people of the state have been long deceived by the PDP.
He told the people that it was not late for them to turn around to support Okorocha and APC in the state.
However, as the people of Owerri-West gear up to support Okorocha, the majority of them said they would still vote for the PDP where they have quality members for the house of assembly.
