Police smash robbery gang in Bayelsa, kill one


The police in Bayelsa yesterday engaged a five-man robbery gang in a shoot-out killing one of the gang members, while the others escaped.
According to a statement by the police spokesman in the state, DSP Asinim Butswat, “Police operatives from Azikoro division responded to a distress call at about 1245 hours of armed robbery operation around Azikoro Health Centre.
“On sighting the policemen, the five-man robbery gang engaged the police in a shoot out. In the exchange of gunfire, one of the armed robbers was shot and killed; a locally made revolver was recovered from him.”
Butswat said the corpse has been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, while investigation is ongoing with the aim of apprehending other fleeing members of the gang.
He said the police command in the state is poised to rid the state of criminal elements and called on members of the public to assist them with useful information to ensure a safer Bayelsa environment.
