Youths in Eyobisung Village in Udung Uko Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, allegedly killed five persons who had been accused of witchcraft.
The youths whose number could not be ascertained, were said to have gone to each of the victims’ house, killing them before fleeing the community.
Eyewitness, Okon Eyo, told our correspondent on Saturday in Uyo that the villagers have launched a manhunt for the suspects over the incident that occurred on Wednesday night.
According to him, that was not the first time such an incident occurred in the community.
“We have never seen this type of senseless killing in this community before. This does not mean that killing of those labelled witches has not been happening, but the number of those killed and the mode of the rampaging youths operation is what baffled many of us,” he said.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident, noting that the command had begun an investigation into the matter.
A text message by Elkana, indicated that one out of the five villagers that were allegedly killed, was missing.
He said, “On 23-11-2017 at about 0715 hours police received a complaint from Eyobisung Village, Udung Uko Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State that about 0400 hours of the same date, some irate youths from the said village, attacked and lynched five villagers on suspicion /accusation of witchcraft.
“They include Chief /Mrs. Essang Ebiagha; Iquo Etim Ibok (f); Affiong Effiong Edwards (f), and Hannah Effiong John (f). One other Flymoh Edet Eyo(m) was reported missing. Bodies of victims have been evacuated to mortuary for post mortem examination.
“The Commissioner of Police has ordered the Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department to carry out an in-depth investigation into the incident and apprehend the culprits.”
