FROM PAUL OSUYI AND EMMA OGOIGBE
Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State has inaugurated the N4.1 billion flyover built by his administration at Effurun in Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.
The inauguration came barely 10 days after opening a similar flyover project at the cost of N3.5 billion in Asaba, the state capital. Both projects were awarded on August 16, 2013 to CCC Construction Company.
Dr. Uduaghan told a large crowd at the ceremony that his administration embarked on the Effurun flyover to ameliorate the suffering of commuters as well as facilitate quick transit to the Niger Delta region.
According to the governor, the project was also designed to add value to aesthetic beauty of the oil-rich cities of Effurun and Warri, which are the economic nerve centers of the state.
While thanking stakeholders in the area for not interrupting the execution of the flyover project, he implored motorists to drive safely on the bridge to avoid causing their loved ones sorrow.
“This flyover which we are commissioning today is one of the three awarded by the state government geared towards improving transportation and socio-economic life around the state. The one at Asaba was commissioned last week while another at Warri is still at its preliminary stages,” he said.
Commissioner for Works, Funkekeme Solomon had said the flyover would facilitate movement to the rapidly growing oil and gas industry in the littoral states of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers, and the huge maritime activities spanning the Niger Delta coastline.
He disclosed that the contract was awarded at the total cost of N4,180,665,615.06, adding that the “entire 447-meter long flyover comprises a 120-meter long six-span bridge, two ramps of about 150 meters and 177 meters at the Sapele and Effurun approaches respectively.
“The entire bridge and ramps structure comprises a four-lane dual carriageway, with two lanes on each travel direction, demarcated with New Jersey Barrier.”
The Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, Emmanuel Sideoso Abe I thanked the governor on behalf of the people in Uvwie Local Government Area for the various people-oriented projects executed during the tenure of the out-going administration.
