THE traditional ruler of Umuezie-Nguru Autonomous Community in Imo state, Eze Charles Iregbu, has pleaded with the state government to adequately address the issue of welfare of the members of the Imo Community Watchdog ,ICW.

The Royal father stated this at Umuezie community after he was made a patron of ICW, as well as received an award for his contributions to the development of the society.

According to the Royal father, the Imo Community Watchdog, as a community based security outfit should be given the deserved attention to operate smoothly in rural areas, adding that “they are more closer to the people in the villages and are aware of the daily activities.”

Iregbu said that if the men of the Imo Community Watchdog have an improved welfare package that it would reflect in their work especially in the protection of lives and property in the rural areas.

“If these men are giving better package, they will do their work with all their minds. You know that they have the information of the in and out of any community they operate in and if you do not take good care of them, the enemies will use them against us.

“They know when we go out and when we come in. They know how many of us   both the indigenes and non indigenes. They have all the information that will secure us in this community. I want the government to do more in terms of what they need to encourage them in their work.

“I have decided, since they have made me their patron. It is a sign of recognition that I will continue to speak for them especially telling the government what the need to operate effectively. In a way of encouraging them, I am giving them an air conditioned office and in that office they have cable and television to be informed on what is happening around the world. This means, they can now enjoy that same conducive working environment as that of their colleagues in the urban areas,” he said.

Responding, the Commander of Imo Community Watchdog, ICW, Mr. Frank Onwumere, highlighted some of the reasons for which the Royal father was given the award, according to him, “Eze Iregbu has shown a lot of commitment in the development of his community.”

He added that, it was difficult any where in the world to get an award from a security outfit. He said: “ We have given to you a priceless award. We did our investigation and discovered that you merited this award.”
